Willsmere now has an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) located inside the main entrance as seen in the attached picture. Using an AED is very simple and requires no training. The device gives spoken instructions, analyses the patient and give directions even while CPR is being applied. The device will also determine whether defibrillation is needed, which is not always the case, and will monitor CPR and the patient until emergency services arrive. To use:

First, make sure someone has called for an ambulance, and, if an AED isn’t immediately available, give CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until someone can bring you an AED.

  1. Switch on the defibrillator. Remove or cut through clothing and wipe away sweat from the chest if necessary.
  2. Stick on the pads. Attach the pads to the casualty’s chest in the positions indicated on the pads.
  3. Follow the instructions. Follow the voice and/or visual prompts given by the machine.
